Norway Expands Arctic Oil, Gas Exploration with Addition of 37 New Blocks

By | May 10, 2024

Norway has offered 37 new blocks for oil and gas exploration in the Norwegian and Arctic Barents Seas through its annual predefined areas (APA) round, stated the country’s energy ministry.

The deadline for individual oil firms to apply for the new acreage is September 3, with a decision on awards expected in early 2025.

Norway’s strategy of extending its oil and gas production has faced opposition from environmentalists, but the government maintains that further exploration is necessary for the country’s economic stability.

“We need further exploration to make new discoveries that in turn pave the way for investments to maintain production,” said Aasland.

“This is important to safeguard jobs, income for the community and Europe’s energy security,” he added.
